NewsWednesday, 4:17 a.m., deputies arrested Patricia Pace, 39, 4508 E. 200 South, on a warrant for failure to appear.

Wednesday, 11 a.m., deputies arrested Usman Malik, 41, Russiaville, at the Howard County jail, on a warrant for petition to revoke a suspended sentence.

Wednesday, 12:45 p.m., deputies arrested Ambrose Freeman, 22, 1000 block of North Bell Street, at the Howard County jail, on a warrant for petition to revoke a suspended sentence.

 Wiccan stabs herself in foot with sword

NewsLEBANON, Ind. — A woman accidentally stabbed herself in the foot with a 3-foot-long sword while performing a Wiccan good luck ritual at a central Indiana cemetery.

Katherine Gunther, 36, of Lebanon, pierced her left foot with the sword while performing the rite at Oak Hill Cemetery, police said.

Gunther said she was performing the ceremony to give thanks for a recent run of good luck. The ceremony involves the use of candles, incense and driving swords into the ground during the full moon. Gunther said was aiming to put the sword in the ground, but hit her foot instead.

 Dump truck strikes, kill bicyclist

NewsRUSSIAVILLE - A young boy is dead after a dump truck struck him Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 750 West and 500 South, just south of Russiaville, at approximately 3 p.m. At press time, neither the boy, who was riding a bicycle, nor the driver of the dump truck were identified.

The boy was wearing a Western Panthers T-shirt and believed to be a middle schooler at Western. He had no identification.

 Driver dies after car hits tree

NewsHoward County sheriff deputies are investigating a single-car crash that resulted in the death of a Kokomo man on U.S. 35 near 450 East Saturday afternoon.

Christopher Sample, 30, was westbound on U.S. 35 when the 1993 red Ford Tempo GL four-door left the road and smashed into a tree in front of a home just west of the highway's intersection with 450 East.

Dispatchers received numerous calls, beginning at 3:49 p.m., and emergency personnel arrived quickly, but Sample was dead at the scene. He suffered fractures and blunt force trauma.

 3 arsons now under investigation

NewsPolice and fire investigators are looking for a suspect or suspects who torched two porches and the exterior of a garage early Friday on the city's south side.

No one was injured in the fires that occurred within 28 minutes and a few blocks of each other.

Firefighters were first called about 5:20 a.m. to a fire on a front porch of a home at 815 S. Main St., Kokomo Fire Department Deputy Chief Brad Myers said.

 Officer's squad car wrecked 29 minutes into job

NewsHOBART, Ind.---- Police officer Tim Pochron's first day on the job went poorly: Less than a half-hour into it, his squad car was wrecked in a crash.

Pochron was inside his house at 12:29 a.m. Monday when someone hit his new squad car parked outside, as well as a tree, police said.

''Pochron was 29 minutes into the first day of his new job when his parked squad car was struck,'' Lt. Steve Houck said.

 County equipment damaged

NewsThe hail storm that struck parts of Howard County on June 26 damaged Sheriff Department vehicles and equipment at two county-owned buildings in downtown Kokomo.

The most significant damage took place at the Howard County Administration Center and Courthouse, Art Fross, supervisor of county properties, told the county commissioners Monday.

Fross said two air conditioning units were damaged by hail and six lamp post globes on the plaza at the Administration Center were broken.

 Officials urge caution with fireworks

NewsSafety is a must with parades, cookouts and fireworks on tap for this weekend, police warn.

To ensure a safe Fourth of July, Indiana State Police are reminding people of the new laws in place regarding fireworks.

According to Indiana law, fireworks can be set off between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m., or midnight on a holiday.

 Galveston bank robber flees on foot

NewsGALVESTON - Police responded Monday to the report of a bank robbery at Salin Bank and Trust off U.S. 35 in Galveston.

According to Detective Sgt. Tom Wallace of the Cass County Sheriff Department, a white male entered the bank about 9:45 a.m. Monday. He was wearing a cloth mask, and he approached a teller with a concealed weapon and demanded money.

The teller obeyed and the man fled on foot heading north. None of the five employees who were working at the time were injured, Wallace said.

 KPD officer remembers ‘angel’

NewsLt. Don Whitehead has seen his share of murders, fatal crashes and other serious crimes during his 22-year career with the Kokomo Police Department.

But what he experienced in February of 1999 was like no other.

Whitehead was called to the scene of a 5-year-old girl killed in a bus accident on the same day as a police-action shooting.
