 | Fire destroys Peru store |
PERU - Firefighters from four fire departments responded Saturday to a fire that engulfed Grant Home Furnishings in downtown Peru.
Smoke poured out of the building, as approximately 40 firefighters fought to extinguish the blaze.
The roof of the building was consumed and the windows in the second story, where store owners David and Heather Grant live along with their three children and three dogs, were shattered.

 | Charges pile up against mothers |
The two mothers accused of abusing their 4-year-old children were formally charged Thursday with eight felony battery and neglect charges each alleging they beat their children and denied them medical treatment.
The women, Melissa Chandler, 30, and Jennifer Leonard, 28, originally faced one count each of neglect and aiding, inducing or causing battery in the case, which police called one of the worst abuse cases in recent history.
After reviewing the case, Howard County Prosecutor James Fleming added five charges of child neglect and battery.

 | Electrical pole fire cuts power |
A small Greentown fire led to 3,246 homes losing power Thursday morning. Customers were without power from 4:50 a.m. to 7:11 a.m.
The cause was an electrical pole that caught fire, affecting the Greenwood Maple Street substation.
"[The fire] was probably due to equipment failure, possibly due to rain and insulator failure," said Duke Energy spokeswoman Angeline Proteger.

 | The road to recovery will be long |
With two Kokomo mothers behind bars in what police are calling one of the area's worst cases of child abuse in decades, officials are now focused on the children's futures.
The two 4-year-old abuse victims found in a Home Avenue residence Monday with open wounds and broken bones were still receiving treatment Wednesday evening at St. Joseph Hospital.
But it's the emotional wounds - many of which won't manifest until much later in life - that will take the most time to heal, said Bob McClurg, a Kokomo child clinical psychologist who works with abused and neglected children.

 | Woman assaulted in her home |
Police are looking for a man who forced his way into a woman's home on the city's northwest side early Tuesday, pistol whipped her and attempted to sexually assault the woman.
Officers of the Kokomo Police Department were dispatched at 2:47 a.m. to a residence in the 800 block of North Indiana Street in reference to a burglary.
Upon their arrival, officers found a 48-year-old female who was suffering from minor head injuries. The female said she had been in her residence at about midnight when someone knocked on her door. When she opened the door, a white male forced his way into the house. Armed with a handgun, the man began hitting her in the head with the gun and attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

Wednesday, 5:30 p.m., police arrested an 8-year-old male in the 600 block of West Jackson Street on a charge of incorrigibility.
Thursday, 4:57 a.m., deputies arrested Amanda Eshelman, 23, Elwood, in the 800 block of East Sycamore Street, on a warrant for driving while suspended.
Thursday, 9:27 a.m., deputies arrested Ross Chandler, 28, Sharpsville, at Ohio and Jefferson streets, on a charge of driving while suspended.

 | Fire consumes lumber yard |
RUSSIAVILLE - A huge fire ripped through a large saw mill building at Hollingsworth Lumber Co. on Ind. 26 Friday.
Several buildings of the 65-year-old business were destroyed.
When Russiaville Volunteer Fire Department crews arrived on the scene shortly after noon, flames were shooting from a large building in the middle of the property.

Monday, 8:25 p.m., police arrested Kaylie N. Miller, 19, 800 E. Hoffer St., at that residence, on a charge of illegal consumption of alcohol.

Sunday, 3:27 p.m., police arrested Tara D. Downs, 18, 500 block of West Jackson Street, in the 2100 block of East Boulevard, on a Class D felony theft charge.
Sunday, 5:24 p.m., police arrested Nicole M. Cooper, 21, 700 block of West Virginia Street, in the 1900 block of East Markland Avenue, on a Class D felony theft charge, and on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and false informing.
